A stone cottage in Monterey, MA — the kind of place with bones you can't manufacture. Rough-cut stone walls, low ceilings, deep window sills. The clients had owned it for years and finally wanted interiors to match what they'd always felt when they walked in: like coming home to something that had been waiting for them.
We didn't try to modernize it. The stone does the heavy lifting in every room — it sets the palette, the temperature, the mood. Our job was to let it. We brought in linen upholstery, hand-forged hardware, wool rugs in heathered tones, and furniture low enough not to compete with the architecture. Nothing shiny. Nothing that didn't belong.
Custom built-ins flank the main fireplace — bookcases with arched tops that echo the stone archways in the entry. The kitchen was fitted with unlacquered brass fixtures and open shelving in white oak. Every detail was sourced to feel like it had always been there.
