Sloatsburg Estate — grand foyer with groin-vaulted rotunda

The Vision

A Shingle-style estate set on a wooded hillside in Sloatsburg, New York. The architecture is rooted in the great tradition of New England shingle homes, but the interiors push forward with a clean, modern sensibility. Barrel-vaulted ceilings, a groin-vaulted rotunda, and a circular turret room give every space its own architectural identity, while the furnishings stay quiet and warm.

The Approach

Cedar shingles, a slate roof, and a barrel-vaulted entry portico set the tone from the driveway. The home sits into its landscape rather than on top of it, framed by mature pines and naturalistic stone terracing.

Arrival

The entry sequence is the architectural centerpiece: a radial wood-plank portico ceiling, arched transom flooding light inward, then the groin-vaulted rotunda with cove lighting and sightlines through to both the formal rooms and the rear garden. It feels like entering a cathedral that happens to be someone's home.

Living Spaces

The main living room sits under a barrel-vaulted ceiling with French doors opening directly onto a stone terrace. The turret room, a circular space ringed with windows, became something unexpected: a reading room that wraps you in landscape. Custom curved furniture follows the architecture. Nothing fights the bones of the house.

The Kitchen

A coffered ceiling with cove lighting, a book-matched stone island, and a professional Wolf range. The breakfast nook tucks into a curved banquette by the windows. It is a kitchen built for serious cooking and easy mornings alike.

Baths & Details

The powder room is the home's jewel box: grasscloth walls, a sculptural crystal chandelier, and a thick stone slab vanity. The master bath runs marble herringbone floor-to-shower with a curbless, barrier-free design. Polished brass in the guest bath. Every detail considered, nothing accidental.
